yay.

it's august everyone. welcome; to the month of my birth.

tuesday was the last day of intern status. the evaluation was beautiful. my little growing brain/heart/spirit was looking forward to getting some areas for me to grow in. instead, i felt like it was Morgan Appreciation Day. never in my life have i received as much affirmation and encouragement as i did in those 45 minutes.

so many times, we look so hard at how we can encourage and fill other people up, we forget to get filled ourselves.

but i did, and my cup was full, and my heart leapt with excitement about the season that is coming. the Lord said that He was proud of me- He looked down upon me and called me His child and said he was proud!

and then the devil met me at the door.

things like:
are you sure you are called to this ministry and is He really proud of you and what about this... or that...

and so i captured those darts and i sent them where they belong.
      the foot of the cross.

but these two days the Lord has been showing me what trust looks like. for the first time in my life, i have not guarantee as to what i will be doing. i make phone calls and send in applications and have interviews. and they are all hanging in the air.

but there are things that aren't hanging in the air. the things that keep me going.

like tomorrow, i will help two of our girls move. today, i created another new brownie masterpiece {yea call me Betty}. i have a healthy body that is carrying me through marathon training {more on that in a second}. i have a date tonight with my one and only.

blessing are abundant. my God is faithful, living, true to His word. He is a protector and He wants to give me things, for i am His child, and a loving Father wants to provide for His children. He wants me to depend on Him as provider. and therefore, i have nothing else to lean on but Him.

running. we are running a marathon. it is happening in october and we are 10 weeks out. this week monday was 11 miles, wednesday was 4, today was 8, and tomorrow, 4 again. the legs are holding up fine. the mental stamina is kicking back in. and i love the time i get to spend out on the road or in the woods. i am no longer eating a vegetarian diet. it was literally destroying my muscles and i was not getting enough protein. however, i am eating more veggies and fruits than anything else. and complex carbs of course.

it has been an adjustment to learn how to run in atlanta.
so. many. hills.
but i am getting stronger.

will is a good encourager through this. especially since he is running it too. mutually beneficial.

i wanted to blog today because i want to keep writing. sometimes i get hung up on other things and i forget to write in my journals. and so this is the best way i know how to keep writing.
i love it.
it drives me to want to do cooler and more marvelous things so i can blog about it.
there will be better stories. more insight and more knowledge as i continue to grow.
i want to invite you to continue on my journey with me.
i promise you wont get bored.

well, too bored.

so thanks to people who have been encouraging me to keep writing.
thanks to people to actually read this thing.

i hope you are learning as much as i am.

oh.

and i found this today.
it is now my inspiration for the month of august.

on your own.

last night i had quite an experience at kids club.

one precious child went all stage-five-clinger on me pretty early on. like wrapping her whole entire little first grade, sun baked, dusty body around my waist, legs, shoulders. it was pretty impressive the way she was able to hold on to me like that.

at first it was kinda sweet. we sat on the big blue tarp in the limited shade available. i figured she was just tired and didn't want to play the usual basketball game we play every week. so we just sat and i held her.

then it was time for worship and she needed to participate, but she didn't want to. and normally i draw a line and say alright chick, stand up, you're a big girl, let's sing and dance! but, being our last week for a couple months, i didn't. so i sat, and i let her just lay there in my lap.

and at this point it was still sweet. until it was time for the skit. which i was apart of. and homie would not let me stand up. she was flinging herself at me. jumping onto my legs. and so i just kept walking. and then i got tot he front and there she was, begging me to pick her up.

*note- she is not 4, this baby girl is 7. she isn't like a baby. and is fully capable of standing.

i do it. i pick her up. who knows what she has been through today. maybe she needs someone to hold her.

after craft/snack, it's time to clean up. mind you, she has been attached to me the whole time i lead a craft group and other kids are noticing this semi-odd behavior. she wont let me put her down. the whole time. and started hurting me. i was trying to hard to be sweet. i started being more commanding in my voice. nothing.

no response.

she started acting like a baby. like mumbling and stuff.

she needed to walk on her own. she needed to be strong and stand up. walk by my side and i could teach her so much more than when she is silently clinging to my body. we needed to have a conversation.

as we were leaving, my heart hurt for her, as did the rest of my overheated, beaten up body.

i eventually pried her from me. literally had to pry her off, with the help of others. and i sat on the other side of the fence.

and as i sat there i got sad. and i tried not to get frustrated or freaked out. i wanted to apply this.

suddenly i saw a picture of when i lay in God's lap. when i am so tired and overloaded, there are time when i don't want to worship, and i just want to lay in His presence. silent. peaceful. safe.

but there comes a time when God says to me,

"my child, i have much to teach you, get up and walk with me. you are still in My presence, but you are walking with me. i cannot carry you forever, you are a big girl, you need to walk."

i learn so many things through the kids at kids club. this was such a large reminder. there are so many days where i just want to lay in my bed and go over the little moments through this internship and see again where God is teaching me. yet He calls to me, beckoning me to wake up, get up, and go! share what i have learned, teach what he is teaching me.

the Lord loves to hold us. He knows we are clingers. He created us that way.

but He also created us with feet and legs to walk. and hands to hold His hand.

last night, as i laid down in my bed, i thought over the ways to teach what i am learning. and the Lord said, right where I am placing you.

so if that means in my house, with my "roommates" or with my William or my friends and family, then so be it.

if that means in a new job... then i will be light there too. i am excited for what it coming.... this little caterpillar is getting ready...

peace and blessings.

i say this a lot when i leave places... and maybe it's because of that awful video about Tina and Peter in the park. but it is what i wish on people. lots of peace and lots of blessings.

last week i was under a lot of spiritual attack after our breakthrough we had. i was in constant turmoil over the situation and my mind constantly traveled in about 4687 different directions. because of that, not only did i have a minor breakdown and begin doubting some things i haven't before, i started listening to satan's lies. which, in case you were wondering, is the worst thing you can do. after letting those lies pollute my little brain and my thought patterns... well you know. my relationships suffered. my sleeping suffered. my running suffered. blah blah blah. i was ticked. not only at this rotten satan but at my self for letting it happen.

but then i got real with satan, told him to back off, and let Jesus deal with the real issue there.

and that's when i got peace.

then friday night outreach came along.

and i was asked to second lead a team. which for a new intern is pretty cool. i felt right in the place God designed for me in that moment. the Lord led us to some people He really needed to speak with. we encountered some frightening things, and some of our team was a little shaken up. immediate prayer. peace.

the following saturday was a whirl wind. wake up. eat. throw on my running spandex. stretch out. hop in the car with Will. drive. park. run 12 miles at 11 o'clock in the middle of the hottest time of the day {we are great with planing}. drink about a gallon of water. shower. pass out. pack. meet two of the people who played a part in Will and I meeting. drive to the lake to meet my family at 9:45 and get there at midnight.

WE WERE FINALLY AT THE LAKE!!

i think i could live there for a season or two. i have not put my pictures on my computer yet, but they are coming. every night was a showcase of the artist we call God. every conversation was blessed with laughter and joy. there were large porches, hot tubs, hammocks, good food, better fellowship, and bonding time with my one and only.

i successfully burned my body. {which i had not done all summer! yay for no skin cancer!} and my arms felt like jello pudding after a short tubing incident with my dad behind the wheel and three boys egging him on.

but it was worth it. and my heart was overflowing with thankfulness for the blessings in my life. for that crazy bunch of people i call my family. for my one and only. for where i was raised and how i was taught. for love.

how thankful am i for the friendships that are growing! wednesday night was a sweet glimpse into a promise the Lord has given me. i am growing more and more fond of this place everyday.

oh yeah. and i got a haircut last week. best decision.

well now i am rambling.

just remember to be so thankful for the gifts you have been given and show love to everyone.

i love you all.
peace and blessings.

breakthrough.

break·through

Noun:
  1. A sudden, dramatic, and important discovery or development, esp. in science.
  2. A significant and dramatic overcoming of a perceived obstacle, allowing the completion of a process.

i remembered seeing her walk down the street that first night. i remember seeing her face scrunched up at us like we had horns growing out of our foreheads. the pain in her eyes was penetrating, deep enough to cause a stirring inside my heart. "Lord", i prayed, "help us reach her."

she literally hated us for some time. her story is so detailed i couldn't make it up. after a series of tremendous heart wrenching events, her heart is encased by a 10 foot thick wall of brick and mortar. no one, especially not "church people", is getting in.

but friday night, she hit her limit. he almost killed her and her unborn child. she needed someone to talk to.

as i saw her across the street walking towards us, my heart began to race.
Holy Spirit, i ask you to start breaking down this wall!
make her open. make her see You, Father, in us!

as i prayed out loud they came closer. this was our chance to speak life into her spirit. LA called to me and said to go. and then i heard the Lord say,
Just listen

so that's what i did.
for the first time since we have known her, she approached us.
for the first time, she wanted to talk with us.
and for the first time, she let us know it was okay.

the Lord put her on my heart the very first night. but it wasn't his timing yet.
she wasn't ready.
now she is ready to talk.
i knew she didn't want me to pray over her in that moment, but she said i could on my own time.

and that is when we experienced breakthrough.

she recognized me as someone who will love her RIGHT WHERE SHE IS.
she saw my heart wasn't to condemn or judge her... it was to love.
she told me she was happy to hear i understood.

that my friends, is breakthrough.

and i cannot wait to speak with her again...

i think these past two months of living in Atlanta has brought to much hope into my life. the Lord is moving in a mighty way here. whether that is through organizations like NightLight or at Grace Midtown or in the individual lives represented in all of my community.
God is doing something big here.
friday night, i was given much encouragement.
first was that my God is faithful.
that He is reminding me of this through my patience in His timing and in His hand on my life.
second was that whatever plan He has for me are bigger than my idea of what He wants me to do. so erase them.

so i am also experiencing breakthrough.
everyday.

june 25, 2012.

i cannot believe it's already june 25. this month has flown by.

i haven't written in a couple of weeks, just to allow me some time to process everything that is going on in my life right now in order to reproduce it in an effective way.

first of all: atlanta.
i love it here. last week i was talking with my little myra [who by the way is AMAZING and is working so hard at her BIG GIRL JOB!!], and we were talking about all this new stuff in our new places of residence. how it's a little more difficult to re-create community for ourselves, while still working and being independent. but i do love it. i have zero excuse to not do anything. there are things happening every weekend, new places to visit every day if i wanted, new people that i have met each week. i really do love it here. for all these reasons and more.

atlanta is becoming home. i am finding short-cuts, favorite parts of town, and learning how to get through traffic without a mild headache.

second: NightLight.
it's hard for me to begin talking about this part of my life. there are so many things that go through my mind every day. a simple update would be merely impossible, but nevertheless, i press on and will attempt it :)

the little babes at kids club are beginning to remember me and i am remembering their sweet names and faces clearer every week. sometimes we get to have wonderful little conversations about sparkled shoe laces and ice cream and how they went to connecticut once, and other times we just sit together holding hands. i love hearing them sing the worship songs. there is nothing more beautiful than a child who has faith.

outreach is always heavy. friday night we were on a track i am becoming familiar with. there are sweet moments of quite with the Lord in this place. i stood on the front steps of a brothel turned hotel, and we lifted up songs and prayers for the people inside. when you hear from the Lord, and you speak into someone's spirit, you see the purpose of this ministry.

it's so hard to fully express what it is life until you are there. so many women just want someone to look into their eyes and see them, really see them. see their intelligence and their potential. like Jesus would.

yet during this time, i am learning more than i could have ever imagined about myself.
God has opened my eyes to so much more about himself and about how he sees me. i am
learning the relationship i have with the Holy Spirit and being connected to Him
and the power and might i can display through using that relationship.

i pray everyday to do far greater things.

third: marathon.
will and i ran 11 miles friday morning. i was totally mentally prepared because that is the longest training run i did for the half marathon. of course, will smoked me, but that's fine. we ran at the silver comet trail in smyrna. which is a beautiful place to run and not see that many people. lots of bikers and not a lot of places to stop and get h2o. and i have never trained this hard core in the summer heat by the way. it's a whole new world and i don't know if it's my favorite thing. but i persevere. and we will be awesome.

oh and a BIG thing for anyone trying to do a long run/ race/ whatever. get good socks! i was having some weird blister issues and so will and i went to REI and got me some awesome Iron Man socks that prevent blisters and excess moisture. i HIGHLY recommend getting some like that for running!

fourth: life according to the iPhone

brothels and waffles.

last night we went to grace midtown for church. as an intern at NightLight, they have encouraged us to go to at least one service in order to see where the ministry's heart is played out through the church body.

the sermon was on mark 2. jesus is being badgered by the pharisees about fasting and the sabbath. and we heard some foundational points. it was a great sermon, but specifically, one thing jumped out at me. and it was about thankfulness.

pastor said something along the lines of...

"you cannot ask the Lord for something, if you are not thankful for what you have already been given."

so many times we pray to be granted peace or rest or freedom, however, we do not thank the Lord for the things we have been given already.

___________

friday night was my first outreach with NightLight.
my thoughts were scattered all day between resting in Jesus, reading the Word, preparing for the weekend in NC with Will's family... just all sorts of things.
i was not nervous, nor was i afraid. i was just anticipating the faces and words i was going to see and hear all night.

here are my thoughts through the night.

the first prayer i prayed was for freedom. i sat in the library at Grace and prayed for freedom. freedom for my words to be His words, freedom for the women... freedom for the men. i declared freedom over the night... like a blanket.

as i asked the Lord for a word about the evening, He kept showing me something bright & pink. "well typical," i thought, "i'm going to strip clubs to talk to prostitutes." but i know i cannot underestimate the power of God.

we go to waffle house, as is tradition before outreach, in the same area we are about to roam the streets. our waitress, full of joy, received words of power and strength. the staff of women, were all wearing pink scarves. coincidence? probably not.

we walked from club to club praying in the parking lots, praying over the ground, praying for the women and the house moms, praying with the security. we stopped in the streets to pray and talk with women. to speak to men. to ask the Lord for deliverance and freedom.

1,2,3 women i spoke with and prayed for. pink.
the color pink is about innocence, restored innocence. and that is what we prayed to see.

as the night drew on into later and later hours, we stopped to ask the Lord for restored energy to complete His plan for our evening.

we heard from girls we had not seen in months. we saw new growth within many of the establishments... one of the brothels had been shut down! the management had a change of heart and decided to stop allowing prostitution. all from the seed which the Lord sowed, using NightLight as His vessel. restoration.

then came the tears for me. my heart started to feel like a brick inside my chest. what in the world, i did not expect to feel such hurt right now. as i stood on the corner of the street, looking out, i see cars drive into the club. i look at the faces of the men. i see my friends dad's, grandfathers, i see my cousins, i see my brother. i start to get deeply emotional. i am NOT supposed to feel pain for them, they are the ones putting these women to work. they are the demand in this transaction. yet Jesus spoke to me and said, "these are my children, called by my name... for I loved the WHOLE world, I died for them too..."
then i saw a vision, for a generation to rise up...

as we drove away, i was silent. everything i expected came true. the Lord showed us more and more of His plan for this track. there is a change taking place, small, but there is a change. a glimmer.

as we prayed for one specific man before driving home, the Lord showered his rest. the Lord gave us words to restore this man's confidence in His power. it was truly a beautiful ending to an incredible evening.

it was Ariel's {team member} birthday now. she laughed as we talked about how she spent her 22nd birthday eating waffles and going to brothels...

______________________

as i sat in church last night, thinking of all the things i am thankful for, i thought back on friday night. how thankful i am for rest, true rest in His arms.
how thankful i am for the freedom i have been given.
how thankful i am for the power i have through His name.

and then i prayed for those things over the women i encountered, and will continue to encounter,
every friday night for the rest of the summer.

If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.
I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given my life.
I am yours; save me, for I have sought your precepts.
the wicked lie in wait to destroy me, but I consider your testimonies.
psalm 119:92-95

face time.

growing up, my mom had this book that was always in her bathroom. it sat on the corner of the large garden tub, and it's colors and title still dance across my mind whenever i think about that little house on Semaht Drive. i couldn't read at that point, at least not well, so i just remember the cover.

now that i can read a little better, i decided to pull out the 5 Love Languages book again and see what it was all about. granted, i had heard the love languages spoken to me as a child and we all tried to figure out what we were so our family could "love each other" better. and now, i find myself analyzing people to figure out how i can show love to them better.

so for a quality time-physical touch-words of affirmation type chick like myself, this week has been marvelous. and i would love to explain my reasoning why.

saturday. let's just begin there. first of all, community and fellowship with the body is incredible! i am a self-proclaimed introvert... i honestly do not get "re-charged" by social encounters. however, they are necessary in one's life and walk with the Lord. we had a cookout for the interns at NightLight and i cannot begin to express the humility and affirmation i received from those hours.

my cousin J sent me a text earlier last week encouraging me to open up my heart to just listen and learn from the people i would be surrounded by. he called them "oaks of righteousness." boy, was he right on target. such incredible, Godly, wise men and women are leaders in the ministry. i am honored to be a part. i received so many words of affirmation during our prayer time. and the Lord showered blessings upon us to encourage our journey this summer. and through our lives.

not only that, but before the cookout, will and i went to a surprise "baby daddy shower" party-thing for our dear friend Cy. i finally met all the friends i hear about from will, who i basically feel like i know.

i had one conversation with Jay, and my attitude about this summer changed.
we were discussing the work i will be doing when all the sudden Jay just stopped and said,
"so what if no one is changed from what you say this summer?"

that stopped me right there and scared me for a second. so i gave a good church answer and said
"at least the seed would be planted you know."

then i got this nugget of wisdom, Jay said, "What if the person who gets changed, is you?"

and i felt dumb. and then encouraged. then empowered. how affirming, once again, that i am supposed to learn... and grow... and that this is more for me, maybe, than it is for the rest of atlanta. that this relationship i have with Jesus, is so important, that He would bring me here, to this place, to teach me one little thing.

lots of quality time and affirmation on that saturday.

sunday, woke up before the sun to leave for the beach with will. we met my family in gulf shores after a 6 hour & 20 minute drive. we enjoyed great food, and greater fellowship with my family. we laughed hard, i got to meet the newest baby bethea, and will got to meet the rest of my family. it was beyond worth it, just to get away for a couple days before my first week of working. and i got a tan...

after another 6 hour drive back to atlanta yesterday, i drove to grace to begin our first night of Kids Club. i love working with kids and showing them the love of Christ through simple, yet meaningful acts. singing songs, playing with side walk chalk, learning about God's Heart, and how he loves us, eating a snack, and just a simple hug. the word i kept seeing yesterday in my thoughts was hope.

we talked about how no matter what we do, God always loves us and keeps us in His heart, if we ask for forgiveness. simple truth.

as i sat on a tarp in the dirt with a little angel in my lap, i could feel the presence of the Lord saturating the playground. i heard laughter and joy in their voices. i saw love and hope in their eyes. these children can and will do amazing things with the right direction. that is why we are here, to share that direction in the name of Jesus.

during craft time, a little boy was coloring a picture of himself to put into God's heart. he stopped and looked at me and asked, "what color is God?"

i smiled and said that God is all the colors... and another child spoke up, "yeh, He is all the colors in the whole world!"

and then i saw the children coloring all the possible crayon combinations on the little paper hearts we gave them. then they glue sticked themselves in God's Heart. such a precious picture. there is no color boundary for God's everlasting love.

when i showered off all the dust last night, i thanked the Lord for the faces i saw and the hands i touched. i prayed they would see great things and do good with those hands. i prayed they would never forget the words of affirmation and the time we spent with them for those hours. i pray for them to come back next week.

the journey begins.

yesterday was my first day as a NightLight intern. we met at the church to do some training and preparation for the coming season.
i started preparing my little brain for this summer a few weeks ago with scripture and books we were required to read. first was When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson. If you are interested in learning about the power of the Holy Spirit, this book will challenge any belief or idea or the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit. On the "heavy scale" i would give it a 7 out of 10.

i read Girls Like Us by Rachel Lloyd. a book about sexually exploited girls and women in New York. Rachel was a sexually exploited girl while she lived in GB and Germany. her story is powerful and not for the easily queazy. such a story brings these situations to heart... and in your face... about the reality of what is occurring on our streets and in our backyards.

i wanted to start using this blog as a journal of my journey this summer. along with the other events that take place this summer, i want to offer this space as a place for people to learn and become educated about this travesty and injustice.

with that, expect nothing. the God we serve is a big, crazy God, therefore we are expecting Big, Crazy things. our God is bigger than these injustices, and we expect to see things bigger than the industry.

so here we go...

before i begin, i wanted to clear the air. the women/girls/children i will be ministering to are sexually exploited, that may mean they are in prostitution, have been trafficked to atlanta, could be trafficked out of atlanta, have been forced, coerced, manipulated and brainwashed into this industry.

many people ask why these women don't "just leave" and these women are just "prostitutes," so they chose this life, and "should we really feel bad for them if they chose it?" they are "working girls," or "hos." but they are also someone's child, sister, niece, mother, cousin, neighbor....

this always infuriates me, then i have to remember that i too once felt the same way. i didn't understand the fact that over half these girls are there out of desperation, and the other half have been forced by some excuse for a man who "loves" them.

these women never had a choice and probably will never get out of the life. they cannot "just leave" something that they never "just chose" to get involved with. i want people to understand the pain and torture these women face. the manipulation. the actual chains that are holding them to the street. and the life.

girls at risk are looking for love, and get trapped. girls at risk are lost, and are taken. girls at risk are searching for something, and they find a man. then their bodies are used at the beck and call of a man who they thing "love them."

we want to show them a man who actually loves them. who knows what they are doing, who sees inside their hearts, and recognizes injustice and still wants them.

he knows their real names.

Jesus is the answer to this injustice. and that is our job to share and show Jesus with these beautiful women.

Micah 6:8- He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do

JUSTICE, and to LOVE KINDNESS, and to walk humbly with your God.

Hotlanta.

wednesday morning i woke up to rain outside. but that didn't slow me down.

i have made many trips to atlanta in the past, however this trip was far from what i am accustomed to.
driving through tiger town starbucks is a trip ritual. hazelnut skinny latte please. and as the rain sprinkled into my car window as i grabbed my coffee from the barista, i realized, this time, i was going home.
i now am settled in beautiful bustling atlanta. i have enjoyed getting moved in and am growing more used to the "you say 20 mins but me 45 mins" away. i am learning to parallel park better. and it's only been three days.
in other news, i graduated college! finally i am able to say those words. after the four year of writing this blog, there has never been a post that school was not looming overhead, barking at my brain, waiting to be done after i made a little post. my creativity and whitty juices all flowed into that mass called education.

now. i get to learn. and do.

i also got an iphone. which has been remarkable. a struggle sometimes to pay attention to other things going on, but it's still new... so i am allowed right?

now that i have an awesome phone that takes incredible pictures, my life is all of the sudden more documented for everyone and their mother (literally in some cases) to view it. so here is my life recently according to my iphone (this will be a traditional saturday post... all the cool blogs do it)

i have successfully run twice in atlanta so far. will and i went to piedmont park today to run and he (as expected) was much faster than i am. we enjoyed the time together, none the less and made about 5.2 total miles in the may heat. the wind was our friend, however.

a special shout out to the lovely fender mandolin that brian gave me. i am learning chords at least one a day. i really like it. it is good for my baby hands and squatty fingers to play. and not to mention the fact that Ellie Holcomb uses onc. which makes me feel that much more capable of mastering the instrument.

brian told be i couldn't come back until i was the master mandolin player of the year. which, might be a stretch, but we have hope.

OH YEAHHH!

I got the summer internship at NightLight! my whole mind has not wrapped itself around the fact that the passion the Lord has given me in this life if going to see itself in the light this summer. i will be blogging a lot about what i will be doing later. i have some emotional feelings right now, and i am learning a lot through the books i am reading for the adventure. if you want info about this organization in Atlanta, look them up here!

did i mention how happy i am to be so close to this guy right here?? because i am. enough said.

sitting here at this desk in this new room is a little odd. mostly, because this is now where i stay, not where i visit.
part of me was scared to move here. part of me was a little apprehensive. part of me was pumped.
now, i am more excited than anything.

i have been given grace to proceed in life. the Lord has shown a little glimpse into His will for my life.
today, i saw a slice of my future. not planning on it, but i saw it regardless.

and the Lord showed off.
my heart leaps inside my chest when he pats me on the back and tells me good job.
when he gives me a nudge in the right direction.
i prayed for the opportunity. he gave me a desire, and a calling, now he is equipping me.

and he is showing me His LOVE through another.
a picture of HIS LOVE.
how could you ask for more?

you can't. because there is nothing else but HIS LOVE.
